Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
Handover Ceremony at Kathyuka Primary School in Mchinji District
June 26, 2015
On Friday, 26th June 2015, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi handed over two newly constructed School Blocks (four classrooms) and two Teachers’ Houses to Kathyuka Primary School in Mchinji District. The ceremony was held at the school, graced by Dr. Nthengwe, the Deputy Director of Basic Education in the Minister of Education, Science and Technology.
Provision of quality education at Kathyuka Primary School is facing a lot of challenges. The classroom to pupil ratio is above the government recommended of 1 classroom to 60 learners. However, the school has about 1169 leaners from Standard 1 to 8 but only eight classrooms available. As such some pupils particularly in standard two to four learn either under a shed or under a tree. In addition to this, the school does not have adequate number of teachers’ houses. It has 16 teachers but only 4 houses. The rest of the teachers, are forced to find accommodation far from the school premises.
In order to address this challenge, the Government of Japan under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, provided a grant amounting to US$102,355 (equivalent to K41.453 775 million at present value). The grant was channeled through the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) for the construction of two school blocks and two teachers’ houses.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Nishioka expects the project will improve the learning environment of the students and also create conducive working environment for teachers. This in turn, will improve academic performance, more pupils will be motivated to come to school and teachers will be professionally motivated to deliver their duties well.
